Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pharmacist counseling on patients’ knowledge of asthma, their medications, and the level of asthma control. Subject and method: A pre-post interventional study was conducted on 59 outpatients with asthma. Outcome measures included the Asthma Self-Management Questionnaire (ASMQ) score, inhaler technique, and the Asthma Control Test (ACT) score. The intervention comprised individualized counseling, inhaler technique training, provision of educational materials, and follow-up over 2-6 months. Result: Following the intervention, the proportion of patients with good knowledge (ASMQ > 75) increased from 10.2% to 55.6% (p<0.001). The proportion of incorrect inhaler technique decreased from 92.7% to 48.0% (p<0.001). The mean ACT score improved from 18.1 to 22.3, and the proportion of patients with well-controlled asthma increased from 43.9% to 78.6% (p<0.001). Conclusion: Pharmacist counseling had a positive impact on improving patients’ asthma self-management knowledge, inhaler technique, and asthma control. Pharmacists may play a pivotal role within integrated care systems to help patients achieve optimal asthma control.
