Parental fear of using topical corticosteroids in children under 18 years of age with atopic dermatitis at Ho Chi Minh city Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology

Abstract
Objective: Assessment of parental fear of topical corticosteroid (TCS) use and related factors in children under 18 years of age with atopic dermatitis at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology. Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study conducted on 345 parents of children with atopic dermatitis at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology from February 2025 to June 2025. Result: The median TOPICOP score was 50.0% (36.1% - 61.1%). The mean knowledge score was 42.3% ± 14.8%. The median fear score was 66.7% (33.3% - 88.9%), while the behavior score was 44.4% (22.2% - 77.8%). Higher levels of fear were observed among parents of younger children, those with early disease onset, a family history of allergy, mothers as the primary caregivers, higher educational attainment, and professional occupations. Conversely, increasing caregiver age was associated with lower fear levels (r = -0.17). Conclusion: Fear of topical corticosteroid use remains common among parents of children with atopic dermatitis, particularly in cases of younger age, early disease onset, or a family history of allergy. Strengthening counseling and health education is essential to improve knowledge and enhance treatment adherence.
