Evaluation of surgical outcomes for benign parotid gland tumors at Ninh Binh Provincial General Hospital in 2024

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the surgical outcomes of benign parotid gland tumors at Ninh Binh Provincial General Hospital in 2024. Subject and method: A retrospective and prospective descriptive cross-sectional study without control group was conducted on 42 patients with benign parotid gland tumors at Ninh Binh General Hospital from January 2022 to October 2024. Result: Simple tumor excision accounted for the highest proportion (72.6%). The rate of marginal mandibular branch (cervicofacial branch) injury of the facial nerve was 16.7%; combined injury of both the temporal and marginal mandibular branches occurred in 7.1%. Most cases of facial paralysis were temporary, graded according to the House-Brackmann scale (1985). Facial paralysis was most common after 1 week post-operation (23.8%), decreasing after 1 month (14.3%) and 3 months (4.8%), primarily at grade II, and no cases remained after 6 months (0%). Other postoperative complications at 6 months included periauricular numbness (47.6%), tumor recurrence (4.8%), and Frey's syndrome (2.4%). At 3 months post-surgery, overall good outcomes accounted for 69%, fair 23.8%, and poor 7.1%. At 6 months, good outcomes increased to 88.1%, fair outcomes were 7.1%, and poor outcomes dropped. Conclusion: Surgical excision of benign parotid gland tumors with preservation of the facial nerve and postoperative defect reconstruction ensures favorable pathological and aesthetic outcomes, and should be routinely implemented at the hospital.
