Abstract

Objective: To describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics and evaluate short-term outcomes of hepatectomy for liver cancer. Subject and method: A retrospective study was conducted on 52 patients with histologically confirmed primary or secondary liver cancer who underwent hepatectomy at the Department of Surgical Oncology and Palliative Care, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, from January 2020 to June 2025. Result: The mean age was 64.6 ± 9.35 years (30-77); males accounted for 76.9% (male/female ratio 3.3/1). Hepatitis B and C were present in 71.1% and 15.4% of patients, respectively. The median AFP was 197 ng/mL (3.45–1668); AFP < 20ng/mL in 28.8%, 20-400ng/mL in 48.1%, and > 400ng/mL in 23.1%. Most patients had preserved liver function (Child-Pugh A: 98.1%). Imaging showed solitary tumors in 78.8%, mean tumor size 5.4 ± 3.1cm (2-16), with 26.9% > 5cm; portal vein thrombosis was found in 7.7%. Histopathology revealed hepatocellular carcinoma in 82.7%. Anatomical resection was performed in 82.7% of cases, with minor hepatectomy in 57.6%. Postoperative complications occurred in 13,4%, mainly pleural effusion (5.8%), ascites (3.8%), and bile leak (3.8%); no cases of postoperative liver failure; 90-day mortality was 1.9%. Mean hospital stay was 8.6 ± 3.5 days (5-22). Conclusion: Hepatectomy is a safe and effective treatment for selected patients with liver cancer, associated with low complication rates and relatively short hospitalization.
