Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol injection in the treatment of benign thyroid cysts at Ninh Binh General Hospital. Subject and method: A non-controlled clinical interventional study was conducted on 41 patients diagnosed with benign thyroid cysts, treated with percutaneous ethanol injection between October 2023 and October 2024. Clinical and ultrasonographic outcomes were assessed before and 3 months after treatment. Result: After 3 months, 95.1% of patients achieved >50% reduction in cyst volume; mean cyst volume decreased from 10.3ml to 2.27ml. The proportion of asymptomatic patients increased from 12.2% to 87.8%, while cosmetic concerns decreased from 70.7% to 4.9%. No serious complications were observed; minor adverse events such as mild pain or transient ethanol leakage resolved spontaneously. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol injection is an effective, safe, and minimally invasive treatment for benign thyroid cysts, providing significant symptom relief and cosmetic improvement, with low cost and no impact on thyroid function.
