Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effects of hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated ZK60 materials on bone healing in experimental animals. Subject and method: 84 healthy white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: Group 1 (n = 28): Implanted with HA-coated ZK60 magnesium alloy bone plates and screws. Group 2 (n = 28): Implanted with uncoated ZK60 bone plates and screws. Group 3 (n = 28): Implanted with titanium bone plates and screws. All rabbits underwent femoral bone defect surgery, where bone plates were implanted into the femur. Digital X-ray imaging was performed before surgery and at 3, 7, 30, 60, 90, and 180 days post-operation to assess bone shadow formation. Histological analysis was also conducted at these time points to evaluate the bone healing process. Result: On X-ray images, from 30th day, the HA-coated ZK60 group showed a higher rate of bone shadow presence and more uniform bone density compared to the uncoated ZK60 and titanium groups. Histologically, at 30th day, only the HA-coated ZK60 group exhibited the formation of soft callus. At 60th day, all samples in this group showed mature (hard) callus formation, whereas the other two groups only began to show soft callus at day 60. Conclusion: HA-coated ZK60 material demonstrated the highest bone-healing stimulation potential among all experimental groups.
