Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and blood lipid profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) at Xuyen A General Hospital. Subject and method: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 222 patients with T2DM from October 2024 to February 2025. Laboratory data including fasting glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and non-HDL-cholesterol (non-HDL-C) were collected. Spearman correlation coefficients were used to assess associations between HbA1c and lipid components. Result: The median HbA1c level was 7.4% (interquartile range: 6.5 – 9.2%). A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between HbA1c and total cholesterol (ρ=0.71; p<0.001), triglycerides (ρ=0.53; p<0.001), LDL-C (ρ=0.61; p<0.001), and non-HDL-C (ρ = 0.71; p<0.001). No significant correlation was found between HbA1c and HDL-C (ρ=0.03; p=0.626). Conclusion: HbA1c levels are significantly associated with various lipid parameters in patients with T2DM, particularly with atherogenic lipids. These findings suggest that monitoring HbA1c may provide additional value in assessing cardiovascular risk through its correlation with lipid abnormalities.
