Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to describe the clinicopathological characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) in children. Subject and method: Cross-sectional study was implemented on a total of 131 pediatric patients (≤ 18 years) who underwent thyroidectomy and histopathological report with PTC from January 2015 to June 2024 at 108 Military Central Hospital and K3 Hospital were included in this study. Result: Patients aged 15-18 years old accounted for 71%; the female/male ratio was 2.1/1. The rate of the classic subtype was 87.7%. The prevalences of tumors > 10mm, tumors in both lobes, multifocality, extrathyroidal extension, and vascular invasion were 58%, 18.3%, 27.5%, 44.3%, and 19.8%, respectively. The rates of central neck lymph node metastasis (CNM) and lateral neck lymph node metastasis (LNM) are 71.8% and 42.0%, respectively. Patients < 15 years old had higher rates of tumors > 10mm, aggressive subtypes, and LNM than patients aged 15-18 years old. Patients with tumors > 10mm and multifocality had higher rates of extrathyroidal extension, CNM and LNM. Conclusion: Pediatric PTC was mainly found in female patients, 15-18 years old. The patients < 15 years old, tumor size > 10mm, and multifocality showed more aggressive features compared to others.
