Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between serotypes and clinical, paraclinical characteristics in patients with Dengue fever. Subject and method: The study was conducted at the 108 Military Central Hospital from January 2021 to December 2024 on145 patients with Dengue fever. Patients were classified into 4 groups based on the serotype (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4) identified by PCR. A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used to compare clinical and paraclinical features. Result: DEN-2 was the most prevalent (60.7%) and was associated with more severe disease, with higher rates of warning signs (76.3%) and severe Dengue (84.2%) compared to DEN-1 (21.1% and 15.8%), which were statistically significant (p=0.002). Prevalence of fever and headache was not significantly different between DEN-1 and DEN-2. However, DEN-2 had higher rates of petechial hemorrhages and pleural effusion (p=0.001). Patients with DEN-2 had significantly lower platelet counts and higher hematocrit levels compared to that of patients with DEN-1 (p=0.04 and p=0.033). Conclusion: DENV-2 is associated with disease severity, with notable hemorrhagic symptoms and hematologic changes compared to that of DENV-1.
