Abstract

Objective: To determine the reduction rate of dental caries after a period of using fluoridated salt in Ban Qua and Ban Vuoc communes, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province. Subject and method: 622 children aged 6–14 years. Method: A randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial. The control group used non-fluoridated salt, while the intervention group used 250ppm fluoridated salt. Result: The intervention group using fluoridated salt showed a reduction in the prevalence of primary tooth decay among children aged 6-8 years, from 88.5% to 47.9% (p<0.001). Fluoridated salt reduced the prevalence of permanent tooth decay, as indicated by the mean number of decayed permanent teeth (D16). In children aged 6-8 years, the mean number of decayed permanent teeth decreased from 0.4 to 0.25 (p=0.002). In children aged 9-11 years, it decreased from 0.82 to 0.57 (p=0.001), and in children aged 12-14 years, it decreased from 2.03 to 0.73 (p=0.001). Conclusion: The intervention group using 250ppm fluoridated salt had a lower prevalence of dental caries compared to the control group using non-fluoridated salt.
