Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of non-surgical periodontal therapy supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids and low-dose aspirin in managing patients diagnosed with periodontitis. Subject and method: A clinical trial was conducted on over 60 patients diagnosed with periodontitis at the Department of Dentistry, 108 Military Central Hospital, from April 2023 to November 2024. The intervention group (n = 30) was treated with a non-surgical method (scaling and root planing) combined with omega-3 fatty acids, containing 720mg EPA and 480mg DHA, and aspirin 81mg. The control group (n = 30) received only non-surgical treatment. The clinical parameters, including probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), Plax Index (%PLI) and serum IL-6 concentration were evaluated before treatment (T0) and after 6 months (T1). Result: The mean values of PD, CAL, %PLI and serum IL-6 concentration decreased significantly after 6 months in both groups compared to before treatment (p<0.05). The intervention group showed significantly better treatment outcomes than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Combining omega-3 fatty acids and 81mg aspirin with non-surgical treatment significantly improved clinical parameters and serum IL-6 concentration in patients with periodontitis, enhancing treatment effectiveness.
