Current status and associated factors of malnutrition in older outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate status and associated factors of malnutrition in older outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Subject and method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on older patients with COPD at the Respiratory Clinic, Thong Nhat Hospital from 8/2023 to 02/2024. Result: Among 253 patients aged ≥ 60 years included in the study, prevalence of malnutrition assessed by the MNA-SF was 21.34%. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that living alone (OR = 5.18; confidence interval [CI] 95%: 1.06-25.24; p=0.042), GOLD 4 (OR = 14.3; CI 95%: 1.03-197.8; p=0.047), dependence in IADLs (OR = 2.73; CI 95%: 1.14-6.52; p=0.024), and frailty (OR = 3.54, CI 95%: 1.59-7.92, p=0.002) were four factors associated with malnutrition. Conclusion: Prevalence of malnutrition in older outpatients with COPD was 21.34%. Four factors associated with malnutrition were living alone, GOLD 4, dependence in IADLs, and frailty.
