Abstract
Objective: To determine serum IFN-γ levels and its correlation with some clinical characteristics in alopecia areata (AA) patients. Subject and method: Case series. 29 AA patients and 21 healthy people were collected. Clinical characteristics of the patients were collected. Serum IFN-γ was measured using Human IFN-g High Sensitivity ELISA (ab46048). Result: 29 AA patients, with 16 males and 13 females, the mean age was 32.2 ± 14.2. Serum IFN-g levels in patients with AA were significantly higher than control subjects (p=0.025). No correlations were found between groups pooled on the SALT scale and the serum levels of IFN-g (p>0.05). Median serum IFN-g level in the AA group with gray hair was significantly lower than the other AA group (p=0.03), in the AA group with positive hair pulling test was significantly higher than the other AA group (p=0.003). Conclusion: Serum IFN-g levels of the AA group were statistically significantly higher than controls. This suggests that IFN-g may play a role in the pathogenesis of AA.
