Impact of self-care knowledge on medication adherence and hospital readmission in heart failure patients at University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh city

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate medication adherence and self-care knowledge of heart failure patients, as well as assess the impact of self-care knowledge on medication adherence and hospital readmission. Subject and method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the Cardiology Clinic and Heart Failure Clinic of the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City from September 2023 to May 2024. The patients or their legal representatives filled out a pre-designed survey questionnaire. Result: The study included 340 patients. The rate of medication adherence among heart failure patients was 94.7%. The proportion of heart failure patients with good or higher self-care knowledge was 61.2%, while the proportion with average or poor knowledge was 38.8%. Self-care knowledge was associated with medication adherence (PR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.03-1.09) and previous hospital readmission (PR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.92-0.98). Conclusion: The rate of medication adherence among heart failure patients is relatively high, whereas self-care knowledge remains limited. Patients with better self-care knowledge adhere to medication more effectively and have fewer hospital readmissions.
