Abstract

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. Knowledge and adherence to medication play a crucial role in improving the effectiveness of BC treatment. Objective: This study inquired into the characteristics, knowledge and medication adherence of BC outpatients at Nhan dan Gia Dinh Hospital, unraveling the relationship between patient traits, knowledge level, and medication adherence. Subject and method: This cross-sectional study administered a survey to outpatient BC patients at Nhan dan Gia Dinh Hospital, from October 2023 to May 2024. Result: A total of 110 patients participated in the study, with an average age of 61.8 ± 8.8 years. The majority were female, accounting for 99.1%. Results showed that 60.9% had adequate BC knowledge, and 89.1% adhered to oral hormonal therapy. There was a significant correlation between knowledge level and medication adherence (p=0.003; OR = 1.32, CI95% = 1.099-1.601). Conclusion: The accurate knowledge about BC correlates with patient’s medication adherence. Healthcare professionals should enhance their knowledge to improve medication adherence, thereby contributing to treatment effectiveness.
