Pharmacy professional - patient communication in practicing: A mix method study at Bach Mai Hospital

Abstract

Objective The purpose of this study was assessing communication practice of pharmacy professionals in Bach Mai Hospital Pharmacy. Subject and method: The data were collected both from managers and staff of hospital pharmacies through self-administered questionnaire and in-depth interview. There were in total 88 participants answered the questionaire, 3 managers and 8 staff of hospital pharmacies participated in-depth interview. Result: More than 95% staffs provided to customers infomartion such as dosage, time of use, storage condition regularly. Pharmacy staffs combine verbal and written consultation during the communication with patients. Each form had its own benefits, pharmacy system staff would choose or combine appropriate forms depending on the time and object of communication. Information on dosage (98.9%), time (96.5%), storage (98.8%), drugs with special usage (87.2%) and notes when using drugs (79.1%) was information that staff proactively provide to patients regularly. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop drug interaction management software to support pharmacy staff in providing information to customers to ensure effective treatment.
