Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the safety of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) 38% in treating dental caries in 3-year-old children. Subject and method: A clinical trial study, a total of 122 children with 614 carious tooth surfaces were treated with SDF 38%, applied every 6 months. Result: No serious side effects were recorded; The most common side effect of SDF was blackening of carious lesions, 536 (87.3%) carious tooth surfaces were blackened after 2 applications of SDF; 5.7-6.6% of children had white spots on the gum line. The white spots disappeared completely after 24 hours and did not cause discomfort to the child. Other symptoms such as swollen gums, toothache or gum pain were recorded both before and after SDF intervention with rates ranging from 2.5-8.2%, p>0.05. After 12 months of follow-up, the rate of satisfaction and very satisfaction of parents with the treatment results was recorded at a high level (82%). Conclusion: Dental caries treatment with SDF 38% is safe for 3-year-old children; Collecting information on side effects and parental satisfaction is useful for dentists when deciding to adopt SDF treatment for preschool children.
