Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence and associated factors of depression in older inpatients with cardiovascular diseases. Subject and method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on older patients with cardiovascular diseases at Department of Cardiology Thong Nhat Hospital from 4/2023 to 8/2023. Result: A total of 411 patients aged ≥ 60 years met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study. The mean age of the study population was 73.7 ± 8.8 years old. Prevalence of depression assessed by the geriatric depression scale - short form (GDS-SF) was 40.6% (167 patients). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that polypharmacy (OR = 2.31; confidence interval [CI] 95%: 1.44-3.72; p = 0.001) and reduction in activities of daily living (ADLs) (OR = 2.72; CI 95%: 1.42-5.19; p = 0.002) were two factors associated with depression. Conclusion: We found that two-fifths of older inpatients with cardiovascular diseases at Department of Cardiology, Thong Nhat hospital had depression and two geriatric factors, polypharmacy and reduction in ADLS, were associated with depression
