Abstract

Objective: To determine the serum zinc level and its relationship with clinical characteristics in patients with moderate and severe acne vulgaris (AV) before and after treatment with isotretinoin (ISO) combined with zinc. Subject and method: Controlled clinical trial. Ninety patients with moderate and severe AV were treated as outpatients at Bach Mai Hospital, along with 45 healthy subjects. Result: The serum zinc level in patients with moderate and severe AV was significantly lower compared to healthy individuals (p<0.001) and was related to the severity of the disease but did not related to age and body mass index (BMI). After treatment, the serum zinc level in the ISO combined with zinc treatment group was significantly higher compared to the ISO monotherapy group and the healthy control group (all p<0.001). There was no significant difference in serum zinc level after treatment between the ISO-only and healthy control groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: The serum zinc level in patients with moderate and severe AV differs significantly from that of healthy individuals. Serum zinc levels after treatment with isotretinoin monotherapy and combined zinc improved better than before, however, a better treatment effect was shown in the isotretinoin combined zinc.
