Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of isotretinoin in combination with azithromycin in the treatment of moderate to severe acne. Subject and method: In this randomized comparative trial, 80 patients were randomized into two groups. One received oral isotretinoin alone for 16 weeks (10mg/day for patients weighing less than 50kg, 20mg/day for patients weighing 50kg and more) and the other group received azithromycin for 8 weeks (500 mg/day for three days in a week) in addition to oral isotretinoin for 16 weeks. Result: Differences in GAGS score were stastistically significant after 4 weeks of treatment. However, after 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks of treatment, there was no significant difference. Conclusion: Addition of azithromycin to oral isotretinoin offer a more rapid response in early stage (first 4 week) in patients of moderate to severe acne.
