Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes two main diseases: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) that is characterized by chronic inflammatory of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) with remission and relapsing nature. Prolonged inflammation results in damage to the GI tract. The disease is common in all regions of the world, more common in western countries and has an increasing trend. In addition to damage in GI, the disease also manifests in many other organs, in which arthritis is one of the common extra-intestinal manifestations of IBD, accounting for 10-20%. Arthritis in IBD is mainly peripheral large joints, a few are symmetrical small joints and axial spondyloarthropathies (axial SpA), most do not cause joint deformity. Genetic and autoimmune factors implicated in the pathogenesis of both inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis. Diagnosis of IBD is still difficult, there is no single criterion that must combine multimodality to confirm the diagnosis. There have been many advances in the treatment of IBD, where individualization of treatment and the introduction of biologic drugs hold great promise.
