Abstract

Objective: To determine the clinical, subclinical characteristics and factors related to early supratentorial post-stroke epilepsy patients. Subject and method: A prospective descriptive study on 1061 supratentorial post-stroke hospitalized at 108 Military Central Hospital and Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital from 2018 to 2022. All patients was clinical and subclinical examination, and follow-up until the patient is discharged. Result: There were 61/1061 stroke patients developing early onset seizures with motor-type and 68.9% had a generalized. There were 73.7% local seizure without loss of consciousness. The mean age was 61.5 ± 12.3 years old and male accounted for 77.0%. The mean Glasgow score was 14.2 ± 1.6 and the NIHSS score was 8.2 ± 1.6. CT-MRI recorded 57.1% left side, both cortical and subcortical areas were 32.1%, most were parietal and frontal lobes. 81.7% was infarct and one area of cerebral artery accounted for 75%. Factors related to early onset epilepsy were older age, male, previous cerebral stroke, lower Glasgow score, higher NIHSS score, mixed lesion area, frontal lobe lesion. Conclusion: Early seizures after stroke have motor and generalized pattern. Related factors were: Higher age, male, lower Glasgow score, higher NIHSS score, bilateral lesions, mixed lesion area, frontal lobe lesion.
