Abstract

Objective: The study aims to provide comprehensive knowledge about telepharmacy for outpatients with chronic diseases and its effectiveness. Subject and method: We searched the PubMed database from January 2001 to March 2021 for original studies of telepharmacy for outpatients with chronic diseases that reported clinical outcomes, medication adherence, or quality of life. Result: Total 42 studies were included and of those, 31 (73.8%) were clinical trials. Most studies used phone calls (69.0%) or video calls (21.4%). The telepharmacy services consisted of medication review (83.3%), patient education (76.2%), and patient counselling (76.2%). Most studies combined these 2 or 3 services (85.7%). Telepharmacy was almost carried out by pharmacists (76.2%) during the common intervention period of 6 or 12 months (23.8% và 30.9%). 21/32 studies that reported clinical outcomes and 9/19 studies that evaluated medication adherence demonstrated the effectiveness of telepharmacy. Conclusion: Telepharmacy could increase the effectiveness of clinical outcomes, medication adherence, and quality of life of outpatients with chronic diseases.
