Abstract

Objective: To assess the effect of keratectomy for treating band keratopathy. Subject and method: This research was conducted on 41 patients (eyes) with band keratopathy. Eight eyes were medically treated and 33 eyes were underwent keratectomy in Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology and 103 Military Hospital from June 2018 to September 2019. Result: All eyes were related to chronic eye diseases and had the symptoms of photophobia, tearing and decreased visual acuity. The 23 eyes (51.6%) had calcium deposition in the central of corneas. After one month of keratectomy, the visual acuity was only improved in 9 eyes (27.3%) and the symptoms were improved in all eyes. The duration of completet epithelization was 8.5 ± 4.7 days (3 - 21 days). No complications were recorded in and post-operatively. The recurrence was occurred in 9 eyes (27.3%) with light calcium deposition of corneas in 6 months postoperatively. While the visual acuity was lower than before the treatment in 3 eyes (37.5%) of medical treatment group. Conclusion: Band keratopathy causes photophobia, tearing and decreased visual acuity. Keratectomy is a simple, safe and effective procedure for treating band keratopathy with very low rate of recurrence.
