Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the characteristic imaging of lymph node metastasis on 18F-FDG PET/CT and CT scan of upper-third esophageal cancer patients. Subject and method: A descriptive prospective study on 92 upper-third esophageal cancer patients underwent CT scan and 18F-FDG PET/CT for staging before treatment. The short axis diameter and SUVmax of lymph node were measured on CT scan and 18F-FDG PET/CT. Result: The percentage of patients diagnosed with lymph node metastasis on 18F-FDG PET/CT and CT scan were 92.4% and 63.0%. The rate of cervical, mediastinal, and abdominal lymph nodes on 18F-FDG PET/CT and CT scan were 44.0%, 54.5%, 1.5% and 47.0%, 51.2%, 1.8%, respectively. 18F-FDG PET/CT detected 277 lymph nodes while CT scan detected 117 lymph nodes. Metastatic lymph nodes on 18F-FDG PET/CT with a diameter less than 10mm accounted for 59.6% with a median SUVmax of 4.0. Conclusion: 18F-FDG PET/CT detected more lymph nodes than CT scan to avoid missing small lymph node in the staging of upper-third esophageal cancer patients.
