Abstract
Esophageal cancer is one of the most mortal malignancies worldwide. Therefore, accurate pre-treatment staging of esophageal carcinoma, which subsequently guides the stage-adapted treatment approach, is critical in optimizing the survival outcomes. Research objectives: 1. Describe the characteristics of PET/CT images of pre-treatment staging of esophageal carcinoma at Da Nang hospital. 2. Evaluate the role of PET/CT in staging of esophageal cancer before treatment at Da Nang Hospital. Subject and method: Esophageal cancer patients who were confirmed by pathology and underwent PET/CT pre-treatment at the Nuclear Medicine Department of Da Nang Hospital from 01/2020-12/2021; Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study. Result: The primary tumor strongly uptake FDG in all 3 esophageal segments: upper third, middle and lower third with SUVmax values of 16.89 ± 5.33, 13.81 ± 4.11, 14.56 ± 4.81, respectively. The mean SUVmax value was proportional to the tumor length (r = 0.3). The number of metastatic nodes was positively correlated with tumor length (r = 0.6). After PET/CT scan, the number of patients in stages I, II, III all was decreased, the number of patients in stage IV was increased. 23/45 patients (accounting for 51.1%) had the stage of the disease changed. Conclusion: PET/CT significantly improves the accuracy of pre-treatment staging of esophageal carcinoma, contributing to improving the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment for patients.
