Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the connective tissue response and ability to support bone healing of Mg alloy AZ31 compared with titanium alloy in experimental animal models. Subject and method: Using plate-screws AZ31 magnesium alone and plate-screws magnesium AZ31 coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) coating to compare with plat - screws titanium alloy. X-ray and histological analysis were performed 1, 2, 3 and 6 months after implantation to assess biocompatibility and bone healing. Result: At all 4 time points, there was no inflammation or necrosis around the tissue at the material implantation site in the groups. From the 1st month after implantation, bone formation was formed in the HA-coated Mg AZ31 group, the HA-uncoated Mg AZ31 group and the titanium group. At the 6th month after implantation, the bone was completely healed in the groups. The Mg AZ31 screws and plate began to self-destruct after implantation, but the titanium screws were not corroded. Conclusion: Magnesium Alloy AZ31 has good biocompatibility and osteogenesis compared with titanium in animal models experiments.
