Abstract

Accidentally ingesting a foreign body is a rather common situation. However, colonic perforation due to accidental ingestion of a bamboo toothpick is very rare. Accurate diagnosis is usually based on abdominal computed tomography or intraoperative observation. The choice of treatment method depends on the extent of the injury, the surgeon's experience and available equipment. We report a case of a 34-year-old man with perforation of the transverse colon due to a bamboo toothpick who underwent emergency laparoscopic surgery to remove the foreign body, suture the perforation, irrigate the abdomen, and put a drainage tube. The patient performed well after surgery and was discharged safely.
