Oral hygiene practices among high school students at Nam Dinh province

Abstract

Objective: To describe the situation of dental care practice among high school students in Nam Dinh province in 2023. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 545 high school students from grade 10 to grade 12 at high schools in Nam Dinh in 2023. Result: Out of 545 students participating in the study, 346 were female students (accounting for 63.5%), 199 male students (36.5%). The proportion of students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades were 45.8%, 30.8%, 23.4%, respectively. Research also shows that 89.7% of students had a habit of using a toothbrush to clean their teeth, only 17.2% of students had a habit of using dental floss, 16.5% of students use toothpicks after eating. There were 65.8% of students have the habit of brushing their teeth twice a day, 14.5% of students brush their teeth > 2 times/day. Most students had a habit of brushing their teeth before breakfast (77.8%) and at night before going to bed (76.1%). Conclusion: The students in the study have relatively good oral hygiene practices but still need to communicate to raise students' awareness about the habit of using dental cleaning tools, how often and time of brushing teeth.
