Hip infections after arthroplasties, pedicle vastus lateralis muscle flap

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of the use of the pedicle vastus lateralis muscle flap for the treatment of chronic hip infections after arthroplasties. Indications and techniques are then discussed. Subject and method: 34 cases, the average age was 61.38 years (23-89), who had been chronic hip infections after arthroplasties, were treated at the 108 Military Central Hospital from 2017-2023. Result: There were 24 island flaps and 10 semi-island flaps. Evaluation of 31 cases, the average follow-up time was 16.77 months (03-67 months), there were 29 patients with good healing. There were 01 patient with necrotic flap, 01 patient with fistula. The site of flap removal in 30/31 patients with surgical scars healed well, no fistula, no paresthesia. The hip function were classified on 30 patients, the results were: 30 patients had no pain, or mild pain. Average VAS score at the time of evaluation was 2.13 points (1-3 points). The average Harris score of 30 patients was 58.2 points (41-69 points). Conclusion: It is perspective over the results of the use of the pedicle vastus lateralis muscle flap for the treatment of chronic hip infections after arthroplasties. It is positively supporting for infections, reduce of pain symptoms while knees still remain function.
