Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the value of plasma ammonia concentrations for prediction of esophageal varices (EV) in cirrhotic patients. Subject and method: Prospective, cross-sectional descriptive study carried out on 103 patients with cirrhosis in Digestive Department of 103 Military Hospital. Venous ammonia levels were quantified by kinetic enzymatic method with glutamate dehydrogenase. Result: Plasma ammonia level had the good value for detection of EV with AUROC 0.89, at the cut-off value of 57.15µmol/L with 77.7% sensitivity and 88.9% specificity. Ammonia level predicted large EV with AUROC of 0.70, at the cut-off value of 62.8µmol/L with 76.0% sensitivity and 62.3% specificity. Conclusion: Plasma ammonia level was the useful non-invasive index in prediction of the presence of EV in cirrhotic patients.
