Abstract

Objective: To evaluate preventing postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting of pre-operative systemic dexamethasone in thyroidectomy at Anesthesia and Pain Control Center, Hanoi Medical University Hospital from July 2021 to August 2022. Subject and method: A prospective randomized controlled trial interventional study. Control Group (Group C): Don’t use dexamethasone before operation and Study Group (Group D): Using dexamethasone 8mg before operation. Result: The vomiting, nausea rate in the group using dexamethasone (23.1%) was significantly lower than in the group did not use dexamethasone (46.1%) with statistically significant difference. The vomiting, nausea level and anti-emesis request in the non-dexamethasone groups was higher than study group (Using dexamethasone). The medium VAS in 24 hours postoperative in group using dexamethasone (4.1%) was lower than control group (Non-dexamethasone) (5.8%) with statistically meaning difference, and the needs of using painkiller at second time in using dexamethasone group was lower than non-dexamethasoen group (Control Groups). Conclusion: Using dexamethasone reduce significantly ration of nausea and vomiting postoperative thyroidectomy; effect pain prevention of dexamethasone in our study is not clear and we need more data for conclusion.
