Abstract
Objective: To assess the efficacy, adverse effects, and factors related to the efficacy of oral spironolactone in the treatment of acne vulgaris in adult women. Subject and method: We performed a case series study of 19 adult female patients with acne vulgaris at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermato-Venereology from May 2021 to November 2021. Result: The treated group had a statistically significant decrease in GAGS score at week-4, week-8 and week-12 (p<0.05). Menstrual disturbances (10.6%), breast pain (5.3%), irritability (5.3%) were uncommon adverse effects. The group of patients with menstrual disorders after 12 weeks of oral spironolactone treatment had a GAGS score (24.25 ± 7.96) significantly higher than the GAGS score (15.82 ± 7.51) of the group without this disorder (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between the GAGS score and hyperandrogen factors (androgenic alopecia, hirsutism, oily skin) in the study group (p>0.05). Conclusion: Oral spironolactone is effective in treating acne vulgaris for adult women, especially patients with menstrual disorders.
