Abstract

Objective: To evaluate PAP Index in prediction of esophageal varices (EV) in cirrhotic patients. Subject and method: A prospective, cross-sectional descriptive study carried out on 108 patients with cirrhosis at Digestive Department of 103 Military Hospital. The PAP index was calculated by using Farid’s proposed formula. Result: Prevalence of EV was 75.0%. At the cut-off value of 0.285, PAP score had 72.8% sensitivity, 77.8% specificity, 90.8% positive predictive value, 48.8% negative predictive value for predicting the presence of EV. PAP index predicted hight oesophageal varices with AUC of 0.77. Conclusion: The PAP score was the useful non-invasive measures in prediction of the presence of EV in cirrhotic patients.
