The efficacy of pulsed radiofrequency of the dorsal root ganglion for chronic lumbosacral radicular syndrome

Abstract
Objetive: To evaluate the pain release effect of pulsed radiofrequency of the DRG in patients with chronic lumbosacral radicular syndrome and survey related factors affecting the results of treatment. Subject and method: 58 patients with chronic lumbosacral radicular syndrome received pulsed radiofrequency of the DRG, utilizing two cycles of 120 seconds, 45V and 42°C. Evaluation was carried out before and just after intervention, 1 month and 6 month later. NRS and ODI were applied. A reduction > 50% poins in the numeric ranking scale (NRS) assessed at 6 month follow up was considered a satisfactory analgesic response. Oswestry Disability Index were calculated. Result: The NRS decreased from 6.62 ± 1.15 before treatment to 1.41 ± 1.09 just after intervention (p<0.01). And it was 1.88 ± 1.88 và 2.59 ± 2.08 at the 1 month and 6 months follow up. 65.5% patients has pain release > 50% at six month follow up. The ODI were reduced from 3.31 ± 0.8 before intervention to 1.22 ± 0.5 at the 1 month and 1.5 ± 0.8 at the 6 months (p<0.01). Conclusion: DRG pulsed radiofrequency is less invasive proceduce but statistically significant reduction in NRS and improve quality of life in patients with chronic lumbosacral radicular syndrome. The poor outcomes were observed in patients with lateral stenosis on MRI.
