Assessment of self-care knowledge in patients with ostomy

Abstract
Objective: To assess the current situation of the self-care knowledge in patients with ostomy. Subject and method: The descriptive cross-sectional study of patients with stoma after colorectal cancer surgery at the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery, 108 Military Central Hospital from June 2018 to June 2020. Result: 123 patients were enrolled, which showed that: The right general knowledge about self-care of ostomy was 60.2% (74/123 patients); Results of self-care practice of stoma was 61.0% (75/123 patients); Knowledge of right complications handling was 73.2% (90/123 patients); Right nutrition knowledge was 74.0% (91/123 patients); Knowledge of true lifestyle was 75.6% (93/123 patients); The right attitude of the patient was 63.4% (78/123 patients). Conclusion: The percentage of patients with general knowledge, attitudes and practices of self-care of colon ostomy is relatively high when the patient is carefully explained by medical staff before and after surgery with specific ostomy care instruction program.
