Knowledge of osteoporosis among women screened by DEXA and some related factors

Abstract
Objective: To describe the current knowledge about osteoporosis prevention and relationship to some related factors. Subject and method: Cross-sectional descriptive study. 398 patients were underwent bone densitometry by Dual Energy Xray Absorptiometry (DEXA). Result: Subject's perceptions of osteoporosis included a comprehensive understanding (27.9%), knowledge of the concept (27.2%), originating from calcium deficiency (90%), clinical manifestations through pain, collapsed vertebrae (73.6%), prevention by calcium supplementation (96.4%). Subjects with farming occupations had worse knowledge than those who do other jobs. Those with an education level of under high school have lower background than those with university degrees. People counseled on osteoporosis had better knowledge than those without consultation. Conclusion: Research subjects' understanding of osteoporosis is limited. The knowledge of osteoporosis is related to their occupation, education, and consultation.
