Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of applying the principles of infection control to wound care for thyroidectomy without antibiotic prophylaxis at Anesthesia Department of 108 Military Central Hospital. Subject and method: 191 patients with ASA: I, II aged from 17 to 83 were indicated thyroidectomy according to the program that applied the standard infection control procedure at Anesthesia Department of 108 Military Central Hospital without antibiotics. If there are complications or suspicion of systemic or local infection will be switched to antibiotic treatment. Result: The first surgery order was 30.36%, the second order was 26.17% this rate decreased at the 5th turn was 9.42% and the 6th was only 0.52%. The average time was 91.14 ± 25.54 minutes, the average hospitalization time after surgery was 3.59 ± 0.79 days. No patients had fever or infection of the incision site. The rate of first wound scar was 99.89%. The patients who did not take any antibiotics were 184 (96.4%). There were 7 patients who had to use antibiotics after surgery to prevent incision infection because of the bleeding of the incision, tetanus and dystrophy fistula accounting for 3.4%. Conclusion: The thyroidectomy is performed under strict conditions of sterility and infection control process in Anesthesia Department of 108 Military Central Hospital involves little risk of infections so antibacterial medications may not be required to prevent incision infection.
