Development of the initial nurse health education competence instrument

Abstract
Objective: To develop and test content validity of the initial health education competence Instrument for measuring health education competency of nurses in hospitals. Subject and method: A two-step approach was used: Step 1) Conceptual framework and item generation; Step 2) Content validation: experts were invited to judge the initial item pool. For each item, experts assigned a content validity index (CVI). 9 experts included nursing educators, clinical nurses, nursing administrators. Result: 1) Conceptual framework and item generation: The authors developed the initial 53-item pool in three domains: Knowledge domain included 17 items. Skill domain included 28 items; Attitude domain included 8 items. 2) Content validity by 9 experts: Three mentioned domains were accepted (S-CVI/Ave values ranged between 0.93 to 0.97), 51 items (which I-CVI values ≥ 0.78) were accepted to establish the initial Nurse Health Education Competence instrument. Conclusion: The initial nurse health education competence instrument with good content validation can be used for psychometric evaluation of the Nurse Health Education Competence instrument.
