Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is an inflammatory condition characterized by focal or diffuse eosinophilic infiltration in the gastrointestinal tract. The disease is manifested by one or more different gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, bloating or malabsorption. The clinical manifestations vary depending on the organ, the depth of the target tissue affected by the eosinophilic infiltration. Eosinophilic gastroenteritis in children is often associated with and/or a history of allergic diseases such as eczema, asthma, rhinitis, food allergies, drugs. Case report: A 6-year-old boy was diagnosed with eosinophilic gastroenteritis, elevated serum IgE, with a history related to cow's milk intake. The patient was treated with prednisolone at a dose of 1mg/kg/24h combination with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) by oral and completely eliminated cow's milk from the daily diet for 6 weeks. Outcomes after 6 months of discontinuation of prednisolone, gastrointestinal symptoms, and peripheral eosinophil counts remained within normal limits. Conclusion: “Eosinophilic gastroenteritis in children is a rare inflammatory condition”. The diagnosis was confirmed based on excluding other causes of eosinophilia and 3 features: Gastrointestinal symptoms, endoscopic biopsy showing gastrointestinal eosinophilic infiltration, and increased peripheral eosinophilia. Corticoid combined with diet, eliminating allergic components is the most effective and useful method of symptom control in most cases of eosinophilic gastroenteritis which is associated with food allergy.
