Evaluation of surgical management of acute obstructive renal failure due to ureteral stones at 103 Central Hospital of Lao People's Army

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the treatment of acute obstructive renal failure due to ureteral stones cured by surgical interventions at 103 Central Hospital of Lao People's Army. Subject and method: A prospective cross-sectional study was performed on 22 acute obstructive renal failure patients who sufferred from postrenal obstruction due to ureteral stones, treated by ureteroscopic lithotripsy and/or open ureterolithotomy, from 4/2019 to 4/2021, at 103 Central Hospital of Lao People's Army. Result: Mean age was 51; the rate of male was higher than female (63.6% vs. 36.3%), age-group 41-60 was frequent (54.5%). Patient’s characteristics: 8 bilateral ureteral stones (36.3%), 8 ureteral stones with accquired solitary kidney (36.3%), and 6 ureteral stones with functional solitary kidney (27.2%). Symptoms: 100% complete anuria, 100% renal colic. Surgical procedures: Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (68.1%), open ureterolithotomy (18.1%), combined endoscopic lithotripsy and open lithotomy (13.6%); all the ureters were placed with a double J-stent. All the patients recovered and the kidney excrete the urine fairly despite no hemodialysis. The hospital stay was 7 days and no mortality. Conclusion: Surgical treatments for acute obstructive renal failure due to ureteral stones in 103 Central Hospital of Lao People's Army achieved a good results.
