Clinical and subclinical characteristics of pediatric patients with maxillary sinus abscess at the National Children's Hospital

Abstract
Objective: To describe clinical, subclinical features of patients after maxillofacial abscess incision at Vietnam National Children’s Hospital (VNCH). Subject and method: A desciptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 90 patients with maxillofacial abscess incision at Department of Odonto - Stomatology, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital. Result: The rate of male/female = 1.3 times, the most common age group was from 5-11 years, accounting for 30%. Patients at urban accounted for higher rate of 74.4%. Parotid abscess accounted for highest percentage of 25.5%, followed by peritonsillar abscess with 18.9%. Patients with fever at admission, post-incision and discharge accounted for 96.7%, 85.6% and 0%, respectively. Severe pain made up 50%, followed by very severe pain with 25.6%. The bacterial culture revealed 31 aerobic samples (65.9%), 5 anaerobic samples (10.6%) and 11 mixture samples (25.2%). Conclusion: The most common age group was 5-11 years, most of the cases presented with parotid abscess. The bacterial culture revealed 35.7% including anaerobic and mixture sample. There were no local and systemic symptoms at hospital discharge.
