Abstract
Objective: To consider the clinical character of tongue cancers, to estimate the response rate after treatment of tongue cancer, to evaluate the 2 years - locoregional control after treatment. Subject and method: A cross-sectional retrospective study of oral tongue cancer cases had been admitted at Ho Chi Minh city Oncology Hospital, from 01/01/2018 to 31/12/2020. Result: Median age: 56 years old; male/ female ratio = 2.3/1. Most of cases had an ulcer with or without painful (87%) and located at the lateral border of tongue (83%). Most of cases were diagnosed in advanced stage (65%). Indicated treatment: Surgery alone (23%), radiotherapy alone (21%), combination of surgery radiotherapy (25%). After treatment response rate was 52.6%; progressive disease was 39% and recurrence was 3.7%. The mean follow-up time was 20 months. The 2 year-locoregional control rate were 40%, surgery had the highest locoregional control rate (72%). Having significantly difference locoregional control rate between stage I-II and stage III-IV, p<0.05. Conclusion: Most of cases were diagnosed in advanced stage. The 2 year-locoregional control rate was low, surgery had the highest local control (72%). There were necessary to apply multi-disciplinary modality and conduct a study and application of a more radical method to improve the outcome of treatment.
