Abstract

Objective: To compare the relapse rate of acne vulgaris after treatment by oral isotretinoin with cumulative doses of 60mg/kg and 120mg/kg. Subject and method: A retrospective and prospective study of 60 patients with severe acne divided into 2 groups. Result: In the lower-dose treatment group (60mg/kg), the relapse rate within 1 year was 83.3% compared with 43.3% in the group reaching the cumulative dose of 120mg/kg, the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). The average relapse time of the group reaching the cumulative dose of 60mg/kg was 5.4 ± 2.7 months and of the group reaching the cumulative dose of 120mg/kg was 6.2 ± 2.7 months, but there was no difference (p>0.05). The most common time of relapse in the treatment group reaching a cumulative dose of 60mg/kg was 3 to 6 months after stopping isotretinoin (52%). Meanwhile, the most common time of relapse of the treatment group receiving 120mg/kg was after 6-12 months after isotretinoin withdrawal (accounting for 53.8%). Conclusion: The rate of relapse within 1 year in the group receiving oral isotretinoin reaching the cumulative dose of 120mg/kg decreased 2 times compared with the group reaching the cumulative dose of 60mg/kg. There was no statistically significant difference between the meantime of relapse between the 2 groups.
