Evaluating the efficacy of endoscopic nasal irrigation in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma after chemoradiotherapy

Abstract
Objective: To describe the symptoms of mucosa which is damaged in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). To evaluate the results of endoscopic nasal irrigation for treatment the mucosal ulcers caused by chemotherapy and radiation in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer. Subject and method: 32 patients with NPC received endoscopic nasal irrigation. Result: Before the irrigation: 100% patients had sputum; 87.5% had sore throat; 65.5% had difficulty in swallowing and 12.5% had bad breath. After the procedure, the symptoms were significantly improved: Only 15.6% had sore throat; 6.25% difficulties in swallowing; 6.25% had bad breath. Complications: Bleeding 3.1%. Overall outcomes: Good 78.13%; moderate 15.62% and bad 6.25%. Conclusion: Endoscopic nasal irrigation is a highly effective combination method for NPC patients after chemoradiotherapy.
