Abstract

Liver transplantation is a treatment method, which is becoming more widely used for the treatment of liver diseases, especially, final stage live diseases. A successful liver transplantation team consists of several specialists to work closely together, of which the pathologist is one of the key players in this organ transplant group. This role starts with the pre-transplantation evaluation of the recipient’s liver by diagnosis and confirming the underlying liver disease. The evaluation of the new donor liver begins with determining the quality and suitability of the donor liver for transplantation during or before the operation by frozen-section technique and continues throughout the entire post-transplantation period by evaluating not only the allograft diseases but also evaluating other tissues for infections, malignancies… Therefore, histopathology is considered as a hallmark test in liver transplantation.
