Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the initial results of trans-arterial chemoembolization using drug-loaded microspheres DC-Beads for treatment of HCC at 105 Military Hospital. Subject and method: A prospective, non-randomized study was conducted on HCC patients underwent TACE using drug-eluting beads. We used DC-Beads (Bicompatibles UK Ltd- Boston Scientific) loaded with 75mg doxorubicin per 1 procedure. Tumor responses were assessed at 1-3 month and 4 - 6 month after the first procedure. Result: 30 patients were recruited, ages > 60 yearss old in most of the cases (80%), male was dominant (93.33%). The most common risk factor was hepatitis B virus infection (83.33%). There were totally 62 interventions (mean 2.07 times per patient). Post-embolization syndrome (PES) was common but mild. There was one case with acute liver failure complication (3.33%). The rate of AFP reduction after 3 months was 60%. The mean tumor size at the time of 1 - 3 months, 4 - 6 months post-intervention decreased significantly compared to before treatment. The rates of reccurrence, metastasis and death in 6 months accounted for 30%, 10% and 3.33% respectively. One patient died after 6 months follow up due to gastrointestinal bleeding. Conclusion: DEB-TACE is safe and shows effective for treatment of HCC at 105 Military Hospital. More investigations are needed to confime the long-term efficacy of this intervention.
