Knowledge, attitude and practice about sun exposure and sunscreen usage of medical undergraduate and graduate students of University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge, attitude, practice (KAP) about sun exposure, usage and unexpected effects of sunscreen of medical undergraduate and graduate students of University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city. Subject and method: The objectives were medical undergraduate and graduate students of University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city. This study was divided into 2 parts. Part 1: Investigated KAP of the objectives about sun exposure and sunscreen usage in the last month based on a set of questionnaires. Part 2: Students were instructed and used sunscreen Anthelios Shaka Fluid SPF for 3 months, then we evaluated the tolerance, satisfaction and adverse effects. Result: There were 431 participants in part 1. Most students had knowledge about harmful effects of sun exposure. 96.5% of them agreed that sun exposure was essential for vitamin D synthesis. 83.5% of them had used sunscreen products, however only 29.7% of them had frequently used sunscreen in the last month. 98.7% of them used sunscreen with SPF ≥ 30. Up to 11% of participants believed that sunscreen application leading to vitamin D insufficience. There were 69 participants in part 2. Median of used sunscreen was 49g (interquartile range were 41 - 56g), approximately 0.8g sunscreen used per day. The level of satisfaction and tolerance were 8.68 and 8.56/10, respectively. The most reported adverse effects were oily skin (13%) and acne (5.8%). Conclusion: Medical undergraduate and graduate students of University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city of had adequate knowledge about sun exposure as well as usage of sunscreen, however, infact their practice was not good. Anthelios Shaka Fluid SPF50 is well toleranted, satisfying and have less side effect.
