Abstract

Objective: To investigate periodontitis in patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease on maintenance hemodialysis. Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 104 patients diagnosed with stage 5 chronic kidney disease treating with maintenance hemodialysis. All patients underwent dental examination and took X-rays to assess the state of bone loss. Diagnosis of periodontitis is based on the guidelines of the Vietnam Ministry Health. Result: The rate of patients with periodontitis was 56.7%. Periodontitis was an age-related disease, the percentage of patients with periodontitis increases with age, p<0.005. Frequency of periodontitis associated with smoking; prolonged hemodialysis time; low BMI < 18.5, p<0.001. The group of periodontitis patients had higher white blood cell count and plasma CRP concentration than the non-periodontitis group, p<0.001. Age, smoking and plasma CRP were independent factors associated with periodontitis, p<0.005. Conclusion: Periodontitis is common and is associated with many characteristics of patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease on maintenance hemodialysis.
