Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and subclinical characteristics of patients with achalasia at Bach Mai Hospital and 108 Military Central Hospital. Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 75 patients diagnosed with achalasia indicated esophageal dilation at Bach Mai Hospital and 108 Military Central Hospital from 1/2014 to 12/2019. Result: The majority of hospitalizations were due to choking (76%), vomiting/reflux (14.7%). Common clinical symptoms included dysphagia (98.7%), reflux (70.7%), and chest pain (41.3%). Moderate and severe dysphagia and reflux were common; severe and often insignificant chest pain. 80% of patients had weight loss, with a loss of less than 5kg at 49.3%. Classification in stages II and III according to the Eckardt scale were 68% and 29.3%. Most of the X-ray images of the esophagus were radish-shaped (90.7%). Patients with esophageal dilatation grade I was 49.3% and II was 37.3%. Conclusion: Clinical symptoms in patients with achalasia in the study were mainly dysphagia, regurgitation and chest pain with the rate of 98.7%, 70.7% and 41.3%, respectively. The rate of radish-shaped esophagus on X-ray accounted for 90.7%. The X-ray also showed major esophageal dilatation grades I and II.
